India Defeat England by Six Wickets, Take ODI Series Lead

Edgbaston: (Sports Desk) – India secured a six-wicket victory over England in the opening ODI at Edgbaston on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Captain Shubman Gill played a key role with an impressive 80 before retiring hurt, while unbeaten half-centuries from Washington Sundar and Axar Patel guided India to the 259-run target with 28 balls to spare.

The win marked India’s first success on the tour after suffering defeats in the T20 series against both Ireland and England.

Axar Patel was the standout performer of the match, making a crucial contribution with both bat and ball. The all-rounder claimed four wickets for 62 runs before finishing unbeaten on 57 to help India complete a comfortable chase.

Earlier, England found themselves struggling at 80-5 and later 107-6 before Joe Root and Liam Dawson revived the innings with a strong 121-run seventh-wicket partnership. Root remained unbeaten on 76, while Dawson scored 68 as England posted a total of 258.

The second ODI of the series will be played in Cardiff on Thursday.
