IHC Sets May 7 Hearing for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Appeals

Bushra Bibi is serving a seven-year sentence

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday scheduled May 7 for hearing the appeals filed by former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their convictions in the £190 million corruption case, while dismissing their separate pleas seeking suspension of sentences.

In its reserved verdict, the court observed that since the main appeals had already been fixed for hearing, the applications for suspension of sentences had become infructuous.

A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar will hear the appeals. The court earlier indicated that an expedited hearing of the main case would be more appropriate than deciding interim relief applications separately.

Imran Khan, who has been in custody since August 5, 2023, is serving a 14-year sentence in the case at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Bushra Bibi is serving a seven-year sentence. Both were convicted by an accountability court on January 17, 2025, and later challenged the verdicts in the high court.

The case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust reference, alleges that billions of rupees and hundreds of kanals of land were received from Bahria Town Limited in exchange for facilitating the legalisation of Rs50 billion returned to Pakistan by the United Kingdom during Khan’s tenure as prime minister.

During proceedings, the court also directed the Adiala Jail superintendent to decide within two days on a petition seeking medical access and family visitation rights for Bushra Bibi. The superintendent has been summoned to appear in court on May 6 with a reasoned decision.

Bushra Bibi’s counsel informed the court that she had recently undergone surgery, while her application for medical relief had already been submitted to prison authorities.

Separately, the court also took up a contempt-related matter regarding alleged failure to facilitate meetings between Imran Khan and his legal counsel, and sought a response from jail authorities.

In another development, the court issued notice to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan in a petition seeking closure of Imran Khan’s account on the social media platform X, citing allegations of inflammatory content. Further hearings have been adjourned until next week.
