MUMBAI: (Web Desk) – A devastating fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SCB Medical College and Hospital in the Indian city of Cuttack early Monday, leaving at least 11 patients dead and several hospital staff members injured.
The blaze erupted in the Trauma Care ICU where critically ill patients were receiving treatment. According to initial reports, the fire started between 2:30am and 3:00am, triggering panic inside the ward.
Emergency responders, including fire service teams, hospital personnel, police officers and attendants, rushed to the scene and worked together to evacuate patients from the affected unit. A total of 23 patients were moved to safer areas and other departments within the hospital.

Officials confirmed that 10 patients died inside the ICU, while another patient passed away during the transfer process. Several hospital staff members suffered burn injuries while trying to rescue patients from the burning ward.
Mohan Charan Majhi, the Chief Minister of Odisha, along with Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, visited the hospital shortly after the incident to review the situation and meet with injured patients.
The chief minister directed authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for those critically injured and announced financial assistance of Rs2.5 million for the families of the victims.
Speaking to reporters, Majhi said the blaze was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. He added that the fire impacted the Trauma Care ICU as well as adjoining wards before emergency teams managed to bring it under control.
