Universities Granted Extra Time For GRE HAT Implementation Planning
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has postponed the implementation of its GRE/HAT testing requirement for admissions to Level 7 and Level 8 academic programmes until 2027.
According to an official notification, the decision was taken after multiple universities requested additional time to properly prepare for the rollout of the policy and align their admission systems accordingly.
The HEC clarified that the requirement for GRE General, GRE Subject, and HAT tests—previously expected to be enforced from the 2026 admissions cycle—will now come into effect from admissions beginning in 2027.
Officials also confirmed that the earlier notification issued on May 13 regarding the Education Testing Council’s implementation plan has been put on hold.

The commission stated that the revised timeline is intended to support universities in strengthening academic and administrative readiness before introducing standardized testing requirements for higher degree programmes.
Under the updated schedule, universities will have extra time to adjust admission processes and ensure smooth implementation of the policy once it becomes mandatory.
