Google Chrome Tests AI-Powered Address Bar Search

Google Explores AI Search Experience Directly Through Chrome Address Bar

WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – Google is reportedly testing a new artificial intelligence-powered feature for its Chrome browser that could significantly change how users perform searches online.

According to recent reports, the company is experimenting with a developer feature in Chrome Canary that allows search queries entered into the browser’s address bar to open an AI-powered interface instead of displaying the traditional Google Search results page.

The experimental option, known as “Fulfill Searchbox Queries in AI Mode,” is currently being evaluated on desktop versions of Chrome, including Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. At present, the feature is not expected to be available on mobile versions of the browser.

Initial testing has produced varied outcomes among users. Some testers reported that enabling the feature automatically redirected searches to the AI interface, while others continued to receive standard Google Search results despite activating the flag.

Users interested in trying the experimental tool can install Chrome Canary, access the browser’s internal flags menu, search for the relevant feature, enable it and restart the browser. However, as with many early-stage experiments, functionality may differ depending on the system and software version.

Google has indicated that the project remains in the exploratory phase. Internal development notes associated with the feature reportedly state that it is being tested solely for research and evaluation purposes, with no immediate plans for a public rollout.

If eventually introduced to mainstream users, the feature could represent one of the most significant changes to Google Search in years by integrating AI-generated responses directly into the browsing experience and reducing reliance on conventional search result pages.

The move reflects the broader trend among technology companies to incorporate generative AI into everyday digital tools, reshaping how users discover and interact with information online.
