Djokovic Confirms Plans to Compete Next Season Despite Loss to Sinner in Shanghai Final
Olympic gold and 99 career titles, but Djokovic misses out on Grand Slam victories in 2024.
Novak Djokovic confirmed on Sunday that he plans to continue “competing and playing next season,” despite his recent loss to world number one Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters final.
The 37-year-old Serbian, a holder of a record-breaking 24 Grand Slam titles, was defeated by Sinner 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, marking his third loss in their last four matches. Sinner, who won both the Australian Open and US Open in 2023, has become a challenging opponent for Djokovic.
While acknowledging that this year has been “one of the worst-performing seasons” in terms of results, Djokovic remains optimistic about his future in tennis. “I don’t know what lies ahead, but I’ll go with the flow,” he said during a press conference. He also made it clear that he has no intention of retiring, unlike his longtime rival Rafael Nadal.
In 2024, Djokovic was unable to add to his Grand Slam tally, with major titles going to Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon. However, Djokovic achieved a career milestone by capturing the Olympic gold medal in a dramatic final against Alcaraz in Paris, bringing his title count to 99.
Though Djokovic is just one victory away from joining tennis legends Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer as the only players to reach 100 career titles, he downplayed its importance. “It’s not a do-or-die goal for me. I’ve already accomplished my biggest career ambitions,” he remarked.
Djokovic also praised Sinner, recognizing the young Italian’s strong baseline game and smart tactics. “He’s very consistent on both forehand and backhand, doesn’t make many errors,” Djokovic said, noting Sinner’s ability to throw opponents off their rhythm—something Djokovic himself has been known for throughout his career.
With Djokovic’s plans to return to the court next season, fans eagerly await how the legendary player will continue shaping his legacy.
