Democrats Take Early House Lead as US Midterms Threaten Trump’s Hold on Power

Democrats lead in 105 House races to 55 for Republicans, putting Trump’s agenda and final two years in office at risk

US midterms threaten Trump’s hold on power, as early results show Democrats taking an edge in the fight for Congress. Preliminary figures from Tuesday’s vote have Democrats leading in 105 House races. Republicans lead in 55.

These numbers are only early leads. They are not confirmed wins. The picture could shift as more votes are counted.

All 435 House seats were up for grabs. Democrats need a net gain of three seats to win the chamber. Republicans began the night with a narrow majority.

A Democratic House would change things in Washington. The party could block or slow Trump’s plans. It could also open wide investigations into his administration.

The Senate is a harder climb. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority. Democrats need a net gain of four seats. Winning it would let them challenge Trump’s picks for top posts and federal judges.

Voters are worried about money. Prices, tariffs and higher fuel costs linked to the war with Iran have hurt many households. Trump’s approval rating stays near historic lows.

Trump defended his record in a final TV call on Tuesday. He said his tough stance on immigration, tariffs and the war on Iran had rebuilt the country. Republicans also say his tax cuts will help voters.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said the country was on the brink of a big change. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called Trump’s final speech “pathetic.”

Democrats now eye red states such as Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Alaska. But they must also defend tight seats, including one in Michigan.

Decision Desk HQ’s final forecast gave Democrats 241 House seats and a 52-48 Senate edge.

There are also worries about disputed results. Voting machines failed in a close New York House race on Tuesday. Local officials said every ballot would still be counted.
