Construction Worker Finds €9 Million Treasure During Sewer Work

Brussels: (News Desk) – Construction workers in Belgium have uncovered a remarkable hoard of gold bars, rare coins and other valuables estimated to be worth around €9 million while carrying out routine sewer work.

The discovery was made by 18-year-old summer worker Kobe during underground pipe replacement work in Saint-Gilles-Dendermonde, around 30 kilometres northwest of Brussels.

According to Belgian media reports, Kobe initially noticed what appeared to be a €1 coin buried in the ground. He soon realised the find was far more valuable after discovering a gold bar nearby.

The hoard reportedly included gold coins, gold nuggets and gold bars hidden inside a bag concealed within the brick wall of a late-19th-century mansion.

Authorities secured the site following the discovery and transferred the valuables to a secure facility in Brussels. Investigators are now working to establish the treasure’s rightful ownership and determine whether any descendants of the original owner can make a legal claim.

Under Belgian law, treasure discoveries are subject to a waiting period of at least five years to allow the original owner or legal heirs to come forward.

Kobe said the workers understood that such a significant discovery had to be handed over to authorities, although he remains hopeful that those who found the treasure could eventually receive a reward.
