Gilgit-Baltistan Enhances Disaster Preparedness Amid Forecast of Heavy Monsoon Rains

GB Chief Secretary Inspects Disaster Response Measures Ahead of Monsoon Season

GB – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – The Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan paid a visit to the GBDMA Minawar headquarters to check how ready the region is for the coming monsoon season. The visit came right after a high-level meeting with officials from various departments to talk about flood risks and safety plans.

Rising temperatures and heavy rain during monsoon months often bring the danger of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods, or GLOFs, in Gilgit-Baltistan. Because of this, the government wants every department to stay alert and ready to act at short notice.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary told officials to keep rescue equipment, machinery, and trained staff ready in areas that are most at risk. He asked departments to pay close attention to places where flash floods, landslides, and blocked roads are common problems.

Teams from the Disaster Management Authority, district offices, health services, and rescue departments shared updates on their emergency plans. They talked about early warning systems, response steps, and how resources would be sent out if needed. The Chief Secretary asked all these teams to stay in close contact so help can reach people quickly during emergencies.

After the meeting, he moved on to inspect the Provincial Emergency Operation Center inside the GBDMA Minawar headquarters. He looked closely at how weather is tracked, how risks are studied, and how relief supplies are stored for quick use.

He seemed pleased with some of the steps already taken but still asked the authority to work harder on getting ready faster. He wants supplies to be available right away whenever a community needs help. He also asked teams to work more closely with local administrations and villagers so that preparation reaches the ground level too.

Later, the Chief Secretary went to Manoga Nala to check the restoration work happening there. He walked through the area, spoke with residents, and listened to their worries about flooding during the rainy season. During this visit, he noticed some gaps in the work being done and ordered quick action against the staff responsible for the lapses.

He made it clear that keeping people safe is the top goal of the government. He told all departments to finish important safety work before the monsoon reaches its peak. He also warned that any carelessness in disaster planning will not be accepted.

Weather experts say Gilgit-Baltistan may get more rain than usual this monsoon season, which raises the chances of flash floods, landslides, and GLOF events in sensitive valleys. People living near rivers, streams, and glaciers have been asked to stay careful, follow official updates, and support local authorities during emergencies.

The Gilgit-Baltistan government says it remains fully committed to protecting lives, homes, and livelihoods through better planning, stronger teamwork, and fast emergency action throughout the monsoon season.
