Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to Retire; Full Court Reference Scheduled for October 25

A formal event will recognize Justice Isa's significant role in the legal community and his tenure as chief justice.

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, is preparing to retire, and a full court reference will be held in his honor on October 25 at 10:30 AM, as announced by the Registrar’s Office of the Supreme Court.

The full court reference is a traditional event held to recognize the contributions of the outgoing chief justice to the judiciary and the legal community. Senior judges, lawyers, and officials are expected to attend this ceremony, marking the conclusion of Justice Isa’s tenure.

Registrar Jazila Saleem has communicated with the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association about the event through a letter, requesting a copy of the president’s speech to be delivered at the reference.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa was sworn in as the 29th chief justice of Pakistan on September 17, 2023. His oath was administered by former President Arif Alvi during a ceremony at Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad, attended by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, and all Supreme Court judges, including former chief justices Iftikhar Chaudhry and Tassaduq Hussain Jillani.

Background on Qazi Faez Isa

Justice Qazi Faez Isa was born on October 26, 1959, in Quetta. He is the son of the late Qazi Mohammad Isa, a key figure in the Pakistan Movement and a close associate of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. His father was the first individual from Balochistan to obtain a Bar-at-Law degree and played a pivotal role in establishing the All India Muslim League in the region, serving as Balochistan’s sole representative on its Central Working Committee.

Justice Isa’s mother, Begum Saida Isa, was an active social worker, holding honorary positions on the boards of hospitals and charitable organizations, focusing on education, children’s welfare, and women’s health.

He completed his early education in Quetta before moving to Karachi, where he attended Karachi Grammar School for his ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels. Later, he pursued legal studies in London, completing the Bar Professional Examination at the Inns of Court School of Law.

Justice Isa was enrolled as an Advocate of the Balochistan High Court on January 30, 1985, and became an Advocate of the Supreme Court in March 1998. Throughout his 27-year legal career, he practiced before the High Courts, Federal Shariat Court, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He is a member of both the Balochistan and Sindh High Court Bar Associations and a Life Member of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. He also served as amicus curiae in complex legal cases and participated in international arbitration.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on September 5, 2014.
