Black Flags and Protests Mark India’s Independence Day in Kashmir
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has urged the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) to observe India’s Independence Day today as a Black Day, in protest against New Delhi’s unlawful occupation of their land.
As reported by Kashmir Media Service, APHC leaders, who are currently incarcerated in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail, called on Kashmiris to deliver a powerful message to India, rejecting its occupation and asserting their demand for the right to self-determination.
APHC leaders Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, and Nayeem Ahmed, in separate statements, declared that India lacks both the legal and moral authority to celebrate its Independence Day in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. They emphasized that India’s control over Kashmir blatantly violates international law and UN resolutions.

The leaders reiterated the unwavering resolve of Kashmiris to pursue their demand for a plebiscite until it is fully realized. They expressed confidence that the day is nearing when Kashmiris will finally achieve their long-sought freedom.
Additionally, other APHC leaders in Srinagar urged the people of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir to strongly protest by observing August 15th as a Black Day. They said this protest is a response to India’s continued refusal to resolve the Kashmir conflict and the severe repression faced by the Kashmiri people.
For the past 77 years, the Kashmiri people have been demanding their right to self-determination—a right that was promised to them by Indian leaders at the United Nations, in the Indian Parliament, and even by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Srinagar. However, this promise remains unfulfilled, and those who remind India of this obligation are met with arrests and imprisonment.
