Billy Root Retires From Professional Cricket Aged 34

LONDON: (Sports Desk) – Billy Root, the younger brother of England batting star Joe Root, has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket at the age of 34.

The left-handed batter brings an end to a decade-long professional career during which he represented Nottinghamshire, Leeds/Bradford MCCU, Warwickshire and Glamorgan.

Root became a reliable middle-order presence in English domestic cricket and was the leading left-handed batter in the Specsavers County Championship in 2018.

He joined Glamorgan in 2019 and went on to become an important member of the Welsh side across all three formats.

One of the highlights of his career came in 2021, when Root played a key role in Glamorgan’s Royal London One-Day Cup triumph. The title was the county’s first major trophy in 17 years.

In first-class cricket, Root accumulated more than 4,000 runs, including eight centuries, while also making valuable contributions in limited-overs cricket.

Reflecting on his decision to retire, Root thanked his teammates, coaches and family for their support throughout his career.

He said that although he would no longer be involved as a player at the highest level, his decade in county cricket and contribution to Glamorgan’s success would provide a strong foundation for his future in English cricket.
