Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Pledges Two-Thirds Majority for Constitutional Amendments
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari pledged on Friday to secure the approval of the proposed constitutional amendments with a two-thirds majority.
Speaking at a public gathering in Hyderabad, the former foreign minister said, “Maulana Fazlur Rehman can bring Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on board. We aim to pass the legislation with the support of all political parties.”
At the beginning of his address, Bhutto-Zardari honored the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy, stating, “Today, we remember October 18, 2007. The people have made this gathering in Hyderabad truly historic.”
He added, “Tonight in Islamabad, I will meet JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for the final time.”
“I will return from Islamabad after the formation of the constitutional bench. Democracy will be in jeopardy if efforts to uphold the Constitution fail,” he warned.
Bhutto-Zardari emphasized, “We will be forced to proceed with legislation if the opposition refuses to support us, despite the compromises we’ve made.”
“I will personally present the constitutional amendment draft in the National Assembly,” he affirmed.
Reflecting on former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Bilawal said, “Benazir Bhutto came to establish the rule of the people by ending dictatorship. She returned to the country with a vision and a manifesto.”
“Her mission was to ensure that the basic needs of the people were met,” he concluded.
