Audit finds telecom sector involved in Rs165 billion irregularities

Service delivery issues caused losses exceeding Rs5 billion nationwide.

Pakistan-(Special Correspondent / Web Desk)- Serious financial discrepancies exceeding Rs165 billion have been exposed in Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, according to the Auditor General’s report for fiscal year 2023-24.

The report revealed that in 36 cases, Rs157 billion remained unrecovered. Additionally, irregularities of Rs134 million were detected in six cases involving human resources, while 14 violations of Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules caused a direct loss of Rs3.74 billion to the national treasury.

The audit further highlighted that poor service delivery resulted in losses of more than Rs5 billion. In total, 58 audit paras were identified in the telecom sector.

Moreover, the report pointed out that while Rs103.7 billion was marked as recoverable, only Rs4.5 billion was actually collected between January and December 2024.
