ATC approves interim bail of Sheikh Rasheed in May 9 riots case

Last year, Sheikh Rasheed condemned the May 09 riots and criticized PTI.

RAWALPINDI: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi granted interim bail to former Federal Minister Sheikh Rasheed and 25 others on Tuesday in connection with the May 09 riots case. The approval of bail comes in the backdrop of accusations related to the vandalism of RA Bazar police station and the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ).

The ATC judge approved the bail for Sheikh Rasheed and the co-accused, while the hearing on bail applications for 12 others, including Sheikh Rasheed, is currently underway.

Last year, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed strongly condemned the May 09 riots and criticized Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, referring to him as ‘stubborn’. During an interview with a private news channel, Sheikh Rasheed shared that he had spent the last 40 days in a ‘Chilla’ (a spiritual retreat), using the time for reflection.

Sheikh Rasheed, known for his alliance with PTI chief Imran Khan, emphasized that no harm was caused during the mentioned period of spiritual reflection. He also reiterated his unwavering support for the Pakistan Army, mentioning that he had advised Imran Khan to maintain positive relations with the military. Proudly calling himself the spokesperson of the Pakistan Army, Sheikh Rasheed expressed his commitment to standing by the armed forces.
