Asim Malik reportedly to continue as DG ISI for another year

ISLAMABAD: Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik is reportedly set to continue as Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and National Security Adviser (NSA) for another year, according to journalist Hassan Ayub Khan, who cited senior security sources.

In his latest vlog, Hassan Ayub Khan said Malik would remain at the helm of the country’s premier intelligence agency for another year while continuing to perform his duties as NSA. The reported development comes amid ongoing security challenges and heightened regional tensions.

Malik assumed charge as DG ISI on September 30, 2024, succeeding Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Adjutant General at General Headquarters.

In April 2025, Malik was given the additional responsibility of National Security Adviser, becoming the first serving ISI chief to simultaneously hold the two positions. A Cabinet Division notification confirmed that he would retain his position as DG ISI while taking additional charge as NSA.

The reported extension would keep Malik in both positions for another year, although the latest development remains based on reports citing security sources and awaits confirmation through an official notification. Minute Mirror also reported the one-year extension while noting that its duration and terms remained subject to official confirmation.

The reports also address speculation surrounding possible changes in the ISI leadership. Hassan Ayub Khan said reports suggesting that Major General Wajid Aziz or Major General Faisal Naseer could be appointed as the next DG ISI were incorrect.

Faisal Naseer has been posted to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA), while Wajid Aziz has also received a new assignment. Their postings, according to the report, should not by themselves be interpreted as preparations for appointment as DG ISI.
