RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: (Staff Reporter) – A medical team from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital visited Adiala Jail on Saturday to examine PTI founder Imran Khan amid renewed concerns over his health.
The medical team, led by PIMS ophthalmologist Dr Mohammad Arif Khan, is conducting a detailed assessment of the former prime minister. The examination includes checks related to his blood pressure, cholesterol and eyesight, along with other medical tests.
The latest examination comes amid continuing political activity by PTI ahead of its announced September 27 march towards Islamabad. The party has said it intends to challenge the Islamabad High Court’s ruling before the Supreme Court and other judicial forums.
PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has criticised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s remarks regarding the planned protest, questioning statements concerning possible use of force against demonstrators.
IHC sets conditions for September 27 march
The Islamabad High Court, in its detailed 37-page judgment, ruled that political protests cannot infringe upon citizens’ fundamental rights. The ruling came in a petition concerning PTI’s planned September 27 march towards the federal capital.
The court said no political party, leader or public office-holder has a lawful right to block roads, highways, interchanges or other public places in a manner that restricts citizens’ movement or access to essential services.
The court also directed provincial governments not to use public funds, official vehicles, machinery or other state resources to facilitate the political march.
The judgment further instructed authorities to establish a helpline for government employees who may face pressure to participate in a political protest or receive unlawful orders.
The IHC warned that officials found responsible for violating the Constitution, the law or citizens’ fundamental rights could face consequences under the applicable legal framework. It also observed that such conduct could constitute a breach of an official’s oath.
The court also distinguished between the constitutional right to peaceful protest and activities that obstruct public movement or involve the use of government machinery.
The medical examination is the latest in a series of assessments of Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. In March, PIMS said a follow-up examination of his eye condition showed improvement, while PTI had raised concerns about the transparency of examinations conducted without his personal doctors and immediate family.
