Afghanistan to hand over Hafiz Gul Bahadur to Pakistan, Jan Achkazai

Afghanistan to hand over Hafiz Gul Bahadur to Pakistan, Jan Achkazai۔ Jan Achakzai demands that Hafiz Gul Bahadur should be handed over to Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference, Achakzai said a decisive step had been taken to resolve challenges to Pakistan with a special focus on repatriating illegal immigrants.

The minister said 400,000 people had already been repatriated – a step which, he said, would benefit both Pakistan and Afghanistan, especially amidst global concerns over terrorism originating from Afghanistan. The minister said 99 per cent of the immigrants were Afghanis, while the remaining were individuals from other countries.

Hafiz Gul Bahadur is the leader of a Pakistani Taliban faction based in North Waziristan. Upon the formation of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in December 2007, he was announced as the militant group’s overall naib amir under Baitullah Mehsud, who was based in South Waziristan, but has largely distanced himself from the TTP due to rivalries with Mehsud and disagreements about the TTP’s attacks against the Pakistani state.

Background:

Gul Bahadur, a direct descendant of Mirzali Khan, is a member of the Madda Khel clan of the Uthmanzai Waziris. Educated in a Deobandi madrassa located in Multan, he is affiliated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) political party.
