Israel President Says New Government Leader Will Be Named Sunday
Isaac Herzog finished talks with all party leaders after 67 lawmakers backed Gadi Eisenkot and 46 backed Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Israel president says he will announce on Sunday who gets the job of forming the next government. Isaac Herzog made the promise in a video message after talks with all party leaders.
He said 46 lawmakers recommended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A total of 67 backed his rival, Gadi Eisenkot. Seven lawmakers did not pick anyone.
The Joint List, which won 11 seats, gave its support to Eisenkot on Thursday. The United Arab List, also called Ra’am, with eight seats, had backed him earlier that day.
Arab-majority parties won a record 19 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. This makes them important players in any new government.
The October 27 election gave no clear winner. Netanyahu’s Likud and its allies won 53 seats. Eisenkot’s Yashar party and three other opposition parties won 48.
Herzog told party leaders that not every promise can be kept if they want to avoid another election.
Meanwhile, a leading Arab bloc spoke out against what it called political persecution. One of its lawmakers is accused of taking foreign money before the vote. Netanyahu also said foreign states may have spent large sums to influence the election.
