Harmeet Dhillon Resigns as Justice Department Civil Rights Chief After Midterms
The Trump ally says she told the White House about her exit three weeks ago and agreed to stay until the midterms were over.
Harmeet Dhillon – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Harmeet Dhillon resigns from her post as head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. She was one of President Donald Trump’s closest allies in the department.
Her exit came one day after the Republican Party suffered a heavy loss in the midterm elections.
Dhillon says the defeat played no part in her choice. She told Fox News Digital that nobody asked her to quit.
“I resigned three weeks ago,” she said. She added that White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles asked her to wait until the midterms ended.
Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the news. He praised her leadership during her 18 months in the role.
Dhillon took charge of the division in April 2025. Under her, the office shifted its focus to religious liberty, gun rights and election enforcement. It also pushed cases on alleged antisemitism at American universities.
Critics had a different view. They said she weakened protections against racial discrimination and dropped probes into police misconduct.
Her departure comes as Democrats prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress after Tuesday’s vote.
Dhillon, a Sikh attorney born in India, is expected to return to private legal practice in California.
