Denmark and Greenland agree to let America expand its military footprint under a deal with no end date

President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Friday, calling it a long-awaited win for American defense interests.
Under the new deal, the United States will expand its military footprint on Greenland. At the same time, rival nations will be blocked from setting up their own bases or making sensitive investments there without US approval.
Trump shared the news on Truth Social, saying the agreement has no expiry date. He described it as giving America the full ability to protect Greenland and its own national security going forward.
The announcement followed earlier reports that the US and Denmark were nearing a deal. However, it stops short of Trump’s long-held wish to fully acquire the island.

Denmark’s government responded positively, saying the move will boost security across the North Atlantic and Arctic. Greenland’s leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, also welcomed the agreement, noting it reflects the island’s own interests.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed the deal too. He stated it permanently resolves America’s security concerns tied to Greenland, keeping the island firmly within North America’s defense zone.
A US official added that the agreement bars non-NATO countries from building bases there. It also grants Washington lasting access and overflight rights, even if Greenland later becomes independent.
Still, many details remain unclear, including whether new military bases will actually be built. Some experts believe similar goals could have been reached through diplomacy alone.
Greenland’s population, who largely support independence, may react cautiously. The island has often pushed back against past US efforts to gain more control.
