Older bikes, rickshaws and Qingqis join the fuel subsidy list on PM's orders

PM – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a major update to the 20 year old motorcycle fuel relief scheme, allowing much older bikes and rickshaws to finally join the petrol subsidy programme.

Until now, many riders with aging motorcycles feared they would be left out of the relief plan. That worry is over.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, any motorcycle, rickshaw or Qingqi rickshaw registered after January 1, 2006, can now be added to the scheme. This move alone brings thousands of previously ineligible vehicles into the subsidy net.

The change comes right after fuel dealers across the country started rolling out the relief package on Thursday. Talks between the government and the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association helped smooth the rollout.

The scheme itself began on September 13. It offers a discount of Rs100 per litre on petrol for people riding motorcycles and rickshaws, as well as drivers of small cars with engines up to 800cc.

Here is how the relief actually works. Motorcycle and rickshaw users can claim the discount on up to 20 litres of petrol every month. Car owners in the 800cc category get the same Rs100 discount, but on a larger monthly quota of 30 litres.

This support is not limited to just a few cities. It reaches people across Pakistan, including families in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

There is more good news for anyone worried about registration costs. On the Prime Minister’s direct order, the SMS service used to sign up for this scheme is now completely free.

Registering takes only a minute. Simply send an SMS in this format: REG, followed by your CNIC number, your vehicle number plate, the first letter of your province, and your vehicle’s registration date. Send it to 9771.

With rising fuel prices putting pressure on ordinary households, this expanded relief scheme aims to ease the burden on motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers and small car owners across the country.
