Pakistan End 16-Year World Cup Victory Drought Against Japan

Pakistan Secure First Hockey World Cup Win in 16 Years

ISLAMABAD: (Sports Reporter) – Pakistan finally ended a 16-year wait for victory at the FIH Hockey World Cup, defeating Japan 4-3 in a classification match in the Netherlands.

Rana Waheed was the standout performer for Pakistan, scoring twice, while Hanan Shahid and Hammad each found the net once to complete the four-goal victory.

The result marks Pakistan’s first win at the ongoing World Cup and their first success against an opponent in the tournament since 2010. It comes 6,017 days after Pakistan last won a World Cup match, when they defeated Spain 2-1 in the 2010 edition.

Pakistan missed the 2014 World Cup and failed to register a victory at the 2018 tournament. The national side also did not qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

Despite the encouraging result against Japan, Pakistan have already been eliminated from contention for the World Cup title. The victory, however, provides a much-needed boost for a team seeking to revive its fortunes on the international stage.
