Independence Day: A Renewal of Our National Pledge

August 14 is far more than a date on the calendar. It is a defining chapter in Pakistan’s national story—a story written in the blood, tears, sacrifices, migrations, courage and unwavering faith of millions. It was on this historic day that a nation broke the chains of colonial rule and emerged on the world map as an independent state.

Yet, every year, as the green and white flags flutter across our streets and buildings, a fundamental question deserves to be asked: Is Independence Day merely an occasion for celebrations, national songs, green attire and illuminations or is it also a moment for serious introspection?

Are we truly fulfilling our responsibility towards the Pakistan for which our forefathers sacrificed their homes, livelihoods, possessions, loved ones and, ultimately, their lives?

Pakistan was not handed to us as a gift. It was earned through immense sacrifice.

Some abandoned their ancestral homes. Some left behind thriving businesses. Many were separated from their families and loved ones. Countless people never completed their journey to the promised homeland. They perished along the migration routes, carrying with them the dream of a free Pakistan.

That is why Pakistan is not merely a geographical entity or a piece of territory. It is a sacred national trust, built upon the sacrifices of generations.

The responsibility of protecting that trust continues to this day.

Our armed forces, police and other law-enforcement agencies have made enormous sacrifices in the struggle against terrorism and militancy. Their courage and devotion have helped protect the country from forces seeking to undermine its peace and stability.

But national security is not solely the responsibility of those guarding our borders or confronting threats on the front lines. Every citizen has a role in protecting and strengthening Pakistan.

An enemy does not always cross a physical border. At times, attempts to weaken a country come through terrorism, propaganda, disinformation, social disorder and deliberate efforts to create divisions among its people.

Yet we must also have the courage to acknowledge another uncomfortable truth: external threats become more dangerous when internal weaknesses provide them with an opportunity.

Corruption, incompetence, disregard for the law, political victimisation, erosion of merit and the pursuit of personal or institutional interests at the expense of the national interest can weaken a country from within.

• Pakistan, therefore, does not need louder slogans alone. It needs stronger character.
• A teacher who performs his duty honestly is building Pakistan.
• A doctor who treats patients with compassion and integrity is building Pakistan.
• A public servant who refuses a bribe is building Pakistan.
• A businessman who rejects adulteration, fraud and exploitation is building Pakistan.

And a political leader who rises above personal interests and places the national interest before partisan considerations is strengthening Pakistan.

The true measure of patriotism is not what we say about our country, but what we do for it.

On August 14, when the national flag is raised, we should remember that it is far more than a piece of fabric. The green and white colours, the crescent and the star represent our identity, our freedom, our aspirations and above all, our responsibilities.

Raising the flag is easy.

Living up to what the flag represents is the real challenge.

To honour the flag is to respect the Constitution and the law. It is to reject corruption. It is to protect the rights of others. It is to replace hatred with tolerance and division with unity. It is to place Pakistan’s national interest above narrow personal, political, ethnic or group interests.

This Independence Day, therefore, let us celebrate but let us also renew our pledge.

• Let us pledge that we will safeguard Pakistan’s unity, sovereignty and security.
• Let us pledge that differences of opinion will never be allowed to turn into hatred or hostility.
• Let us pledge that terrorism and anti-state activities will be confronted firmly, but always within the framework of law and justice.
• Let us pledge that corruption, incompetence and lawlessness will never be accepted as normal features of national life.

And let us pledge that each of us will perform our individual responsibilities with honesty, dedication and a genuine sense of duty.

We must remember that Pakistan was not merely liberated on August 14, 1947. Freedom is not preserved by history alone; every generation must earn the right to preserve it through its conduct.

Today, the green and white flag flies proudly across the country. National songs echo through our cities. Streets and buildings are illuminated in celebration.

But beneath the sounds of celebration lies a quieter question one that does not come from the streets, but from the conscience of the nation:

Have we succeeded in building the Pakistan our forefathers dreamed of?

If the answer is not an unequivocal “yes,” there is no reason for despair. But neither is there any room for complacency.

• The unfinished work of nation-building remains before us.
• Let us, therefore, do more than say “Pakistan Zindabad.”
• Let us make Pakistan stronger through our honesty.
• Let us make it more prosperous through our hard work.
• Let us make it more just through our respect for the law.
• Let us make it more united through tolerance and mutual respect.

And let us prove, through our character and conduct, that Pakistan is not merely the country in which we live it is a responsibility we have inherited and a legacy we must pass on to future generations.

• This is the true spirit of Independence Day.
• This is the true meaning of patriotism.
• And this is the demand of the sacrifices through which Pakistan came into being.

With this renewed pledge of loyalty, responsibility and service to the homeland, I extend my heartfelt wishes to all Pakistanis on Independence Day.
