New Punjab Rules Restrict Costumes and Content in Theatre Dramas

LAHORE: (News Desk) – The Punjab government has introduced a new 14-point policy to regulate theatre dramas across the province, with a focus on promoting cultural values and ensuring appropriate content in performances.

Under the new guidelines, theatre administrations have been barred from allowing sleeveless and shoulderless costumes in dramas. Producers have also been instructed to ensure that costumes, themes and performances reflect Punjab’s cultural traditions.

Theatre administrations will now be required to submit drama scripts to the authorities at least one week before a scheduled performance for review and approval.

The new policy also limits each theatre drama to a maximum of five songs. Additional songs and what authorities describe as unnecessary stage elements will not be permitted.

Strict instructions have been issued against the inclusion of immoral, inappropriate or objectionable material in theatrical performances.

The guidelines further state that theatre administrations must obtain prior approval before replacing an actor or introducing a new artist into a production.

Producers and theatre managements have also been encouraged to incorporate public awareness themes and positive social messages into their storylines.

The Punjab Council of the Arts has directed theatre administrations across the province to ensure strict implementation of the newly introduced 14-point policy.
