Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods

WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – US President Donald Trump has signed executive orders imposing new 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products, accusing Ottawa of unfair trade practices against American alcohol, dairy, and automobile exports. The White House said the new duties will take effect in 30 days and will apply to products such as wine, hockey sticks, and cement, while energy, potash, and goods already covered by sector-specific tariffs will remain exempt.

Unlike previous trade measures, the latest tariffs will also affect products traded under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), raising concerns about worsening trade relations between the two neighboring countries.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the move, calling it a unilateral action that violates the trade pact, while reaffirming Canada’s willingness to continue negotiations and modernize the agreement. Trade experts have also questioned Trump’s use of Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, warning that the unprecedented legal approach could face significant court challenges.
