Floods Devastate Northeastern Afghanistan, 20 Dead, Over 100 Missing
Afghanistan's disaster management agency confirmed that 20 bodies have been recovered
KABUL: (News Desk) – Severe flooding has caused widespread devastation in northeastern Afghanistan, killing at least 20 people, injuring more than 80, and leaving over 100 others missing, according to local authorities.
Officials said the floods struck Nuristan province on Monday, with the provincial capital, Parun, among the hardest-hit areas. Shops along the riverbank were washed away, leaving behind mud and debris.
Afghanistan’s disaster management agency confirmed that 20 bodies have been recovered so far, while rescue efforts continue to search for more than 100 missing people. Most of the casualties were reported in Parun and other parts of Nuristan, which borders Pakistan.
Authorities said the floods destroyed hotels and dozens of shops, while large boulders carried by floodwaters blocked parts of the city. The disaster agency has also warned of more heavy rain and storms in several provinces, urging residents to stay away from rivers and other flood-prone areas.
