Kuwait Seeks Saudi-Style Defence Partnership with Pakistan: Reuters
Pakistan And Kuwait Discuss Broader Defence Ties, Energy Investment Partnership
ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – Pakistan and Kuwait have begun preliminary discussions to expand their defence cooperation framework, while also exploring opportunities for collaboration in energy and investment sectors, according to sources cited by Reuters.
The talks reportedly focus on Kuwait’s interest in developing broader defence ties with Pakistan similar to its existing cooperation with Saudi Arabia. Discussions include possible collaboration involving Pakistan’s military capabilities, fighter aircraft, drones and air defence systems.
In return for deeper defence cooperation, Pakistan is seeking increased support from Kuwait in the energy sector. Kuwait has also shown interest in a proposed bonded fuel storage project in Pakistan aimed at ensuring diesel supply arrangements.
The report further stated that Bahrain is also considering stronger defence cooperation with Pakistan, while Jordan has expressed interest in potential agreements involving weapons and military training.
However, sources said that ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran could influence the pace of Pakistan-Kuwait defence discussions. The talks are expected to progress further if regional tensions decline.
Pakistan and Kuwait already maintain a limited defence cooperation agreement signed in 2023, which covers areas such as military training and joint exercises. Kuwait is now looking to develop a wider strategic partnership similar to Pakistan’s existing defence cooperation model with Saudi Arabia.
