Pakistan to Replace Traditional Passports with Advanced Fully Digital e-Passport System
ISLAMABAD: (Staff Reporter) – Pakistan has announced plans to gradually replace traditional Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) with a fully digital e-Passport system designed to make passport services faster, more secure and more convenient for citizens.
Under the proposed system, applicants will be able to complete the entire passport process from home through a mobile application. Citizens will be able to upload required documents, pay fees online and receive their passports through doorstep delivery.
Director General Passports Muhammad Abdul Khaliq said Pakistan introduced its first e-Passport in 2022 and has since upgraded the system to align with international standards. The new e-Passports incorporate advanced laser engraving technology and digital security certificates to strengthen protection against forgery and fraud.
He added that once Pakistan completes its registration process with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the country’s e-Passports will become compatible with automated e-gates at airports worldwide, allowing faster immigration clearance for travelers.
The passport application system will also be integrated with NADRA’s Pak ID mobile app, enabling applicants in Pakistan and overseas to submit biometric data, photographs and supporting documents online. Those unable to complete biometric verification digitally will have the option to visit the nearest NADRA or passport office for verification without lengthy waiting times.

The upgraded system will further introduce online interviews where required, digital document submission and electronic fee payments through mobile banking applications and digital wallets, aiming to make passport issuance more transparent, efficient and user-friendly.
