Bilawal Bhutto Challenges PML-N to Hold Local Government Elections in Lahore and Islamabad

Strengthening local governments remains essential for effective public service delivery, accountability, and grassroots participation, Bilawal said.

ISLAMABAD: (Mudassar Iqbal) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has challenged his coalition partner, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), to conduct local government elections in Lahore and Islamabad, arguing that genuine commitment to local governance must be demonstrated through action rather than political rhetoric.

Speaking during a public address and in response to ongoing debates regarding local government reforms, Bilawal said that the PML-N’s proposals regarding constitutional amendments to empower local governments in Sindh amounted to nothing more than a “lollipop” for the people of Karachi.

“If the PML-N is truly committed to empowering local governments, then it should first hold local government elections in Lahore and Islamabad and demonstrate how serious it is about devolving power to the grassroots level,” he said.

The PPP chairman defended Sindh’s local government framework and rejected criticism from political opponents, maintaining that elected local bodies already exist in the province and continue to function under a democratic system.

Bilawal also took aim at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), questioning the party’s commitment to its demands regarding local government empowerment and administrative reforms.

“If MQM is sincere in its demands, it should prove its seriousness by withdrawing from the federal government,” he remarked.

The PPP leader argued that political parties often raise concerns about local governance while continuing to remain part of ruling coalitions, creating what he described as a contradiction between their public positions and political actions.

During his speech, Bilawal reiterated the PPP’s long-standing stance in favor of democratic decentralization, saying that strengthening local governments remains essential for effective public service delivery, accountability, and grassroots participationstrengthening local governments remains essential for effective public service delivery, accountability, and grassroots participation in governance.

He further stated that local government institutions serve as the foundation of democracy and should be strengthened across all provinces without discrimination.

The remarks are likely to intensify political debate among coalition partners, particularly over issues related to local government reforms, constitutional changes, and the distribution of administrative powers between federal, provincial, and local authorities.

Political observers view Bilawal’s comments as part of an ongoing discussion regarding the future of local governance in Pakistan, with major political parties continuing to differ on the structure, powers, and autonomy of local government institutions.
