General Christopher Donahue Retirement: Last Soldier Out of Afghanistan Steps Down
General Christopher Donahue Retirement Ends Career of Last US Soldier Out of Afghanistan
US ARMY – (Web Desk) – General Christopher Donahue retirement has shocked the US military world. One of America’s most respected Army generals is leaving his post after only 18 months on the job.
The US Army confirmed that Gen. Donahue will step down on July 2, 2026. He currently leads US Army Europe and Africa and also commands NATO’s Allied Land Command.
Donahue is best known for a single iconic moment. On August 30, 2021, he became the last American soldier to leave Afghanistan. A night-vision photo of him boarding the final C-17 military plane out of Kabul became famous around the world.
Despite that historic exit, Donahue’s leadership during the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal earned praise from both Democrats and Republicans. Inside the Army, many believed he was destined to become Army Chief of Staff or even Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
His departure is part of a much bigger pattern. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been pushing a major overhaul of the military’s senior leadership. His motto is simple: “less generals, more GIs.” Nearly two dozen top military officers have now retired or left early under his watch.
There is also a structural reason behind this exit. Army officials are discussing downgrading US Army Europe and Africa from a four-star command to a three-star post. Since Donahue holds a four-star rank, that change would leave him with no position to fill, forcing retirement.
Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, Donahue’s deputy, will take over his duties temporarily until a permanent replacement is named.
Hegseth has also announced a six-month review of all US forces in Europe. He told NATO allies this review will measure whether European countries are taking enough responsibility for their own defense.
Senator Thom Tillis and Senator Mitch McConnell both expressed concern over Donahue’s exit. They called him one of the finest warfighters in US military history and warned that losing such leaders weakens America’s Army.
Gen. Donahue spent over three decades serving his country. He commanded elite Delta Force units, led the famous 82nd Airborne Division, and helped Ukraine survive the early months of the Russian invasion. His retirement closes a remarkable chapter in modern American military history.
