UNICEF Condemns Ongoing Child Deaths Despite Gaza Ceasefire

Ceasefire in Gaza Fails to End Civilian Suffering: UN

GENEVA: (Web Desk) – The United Nations has sharply criticized the situation in Gaza, describing the ceasefire declared more than eight months ago as a “deadly illusion” amid continued reports of civilian casualties, particularly among children.

According to figures cited by the UN, at least 265 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire was announced in October 2025. The Gaza health authorities report that nearly 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives during the same period as military operations and airstrikes continued across the territory.

Speaking in Geneva via video link from Amman, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said the number of child fatalities recorded since the ceasefire was announced is both shocking and heartbreaking. He noted that, on average, one child has been killed every day for more than eight months despite expectations that the truce would provide protection for civilians.

Elder argued that many of the children were not killed in active combat zones but in places where they should have been safe, including homes, schools, playgrounds, and coastal areas. He said children have been affected by shootings, airstrikes, and other forms of violence despite the ceasefire arrangement.

Highlighting recent incidents, Elder cited cases involving young children and teenagers who reportedly lost their lives in separate military actions during the past week. He said these deaths raise serious questions about the effectiveness of the ceasefire and the protection of civilians.

Beyond the fatalities, UNICEF reported that more than 400 children have been injured since the truce was declared, many suffering severe and life-changing wounds. The agency also expressed concern over restrictions affecting medical supplies and treatment, warning that injured children face increased risks of infection and long-term complications.

The UN further warned of the psychological impact on Gaza’s younger population. According to UNICEF, years of conflict, displacement, and loss have left many children struggling with deep emotional trauma that affects their daily lives, education, and overall development.

Calling the situation unacceptable, Elder stressed that the continued deaths of children cannot be viewed as inevitable. He urged the international community to take stronger action to protect civilians and prevent further loss of life, emphasizing that child casualties on such a scale should ne
