JI Chief Demands Relief From Petroleum Levy Burden

Lahore: (Web Desk) Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has criticized the government’s Petroleum Development Levy, arguing that the public is being burdened through frequent fuel price revisions and additional charges. Speaking to journalists in Lahore, he said the weekly announcement of petroleum prices has effectively become a recurring financial strain on citizens.

He claimed the levy generates massive revenue outside the traditional tax collection system and alleged that successive governments have continued the practice since its introduction. Hafiz Naeem said Jamaat-e-Islami is consulting on possible protest measures, including a wheel jam strike, if the levy is not withdrawn. He also called for petroleum, electricity and gas prices to remain unchanged for the next three years to provide economic stability.

Stressing the difficulties faced by middle and lower income families, he demanded income tax relief for salaried individuals earning up to Rs125,000 per month and warned that imposing further taxes could negatively affect economic growth and public welfare.

He called for petroleum electricity and gas prices to remain fixed for three years demanded tax relief for salaried workers and warned that additional taxes could harm both citizens and the economy. The JI leader also indicated that protest options are being considered if the levy remains in place.
