SJC Dismisses PTI Complaint Against CEC Over February 8 Election Conduct

SJC Dismisses PTI Complaint Against CEC — What It Means for Pakistan's Political Future

SJC – The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has officially dismissed PTI’s complaint against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). This decision closes a long-standing legal battle that PTI had been pursuing since mid-2024.

PTI’s former secretary general, Omar Ayub Khan, had filed the complaint. He demanded the removal of CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja, accusing him of failing his constitutional duties during the February 8 general elections.

The SJC confirmed that the matter was reviewed in its February 11 meeting. After carefully examining all arguments and supporting material, the council decided to reject the petition outright.

This was not PTI’s first attempt. Back in July 2024, the party had already filed a similar petition under Articles 209(5) and (6) of the Constitution. PTI argued that the Election Commission failed to hold free and fair elections.

PTI also accused the ECP of ignoring Supreme Court orders that required elections to be held within the constitutional timeframe. The party claimed the ECP showed clear bias against former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Among the key accusations, PTI alleged that the ECP wrongfully unseated Imran Khan from the National Assembly, banned him from contesting elections for five years, and removed him from party leadership.

PTI further argued that reserved seats — which should have gone to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) — were unlawfully handed to other political parties after the February 2024 elections.

With the SJC’s final dismissal, PTI’s legal route against the CEC has now officially come to an end.
