SC allows Safdar to meet Imran Khan today
Supreme Court appoints Safdar to report on Imran Khan
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday allowed Barrister Salman Safdar to meet former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, currently detained at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The SC appointed Safdar as ‘Friend of the Court’ to report on Khan’s physical condition and living arrangements.
During the hearing of appeals in the Toshakhana case, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi noted that Safdar would visit the jail and submit a report on facilities provided to the former premier. The next hearing has been scheduled for February 12.
On Monday, the SC rejected a request for an immediate meeting with Imran Khan while forming a three-member bench to hear appeals challenging his acquittal in the cypher case. CJP Afridi emphasized that no orders could be issued without notifying the other party and hearing objections regarding the maintainability of the petitions.
Supreme Court Rejects Urgent PTI Founder Meeting Request
Separately, the SC directed the Attorney General of Pakistan to submit a detailed report on Khan’s detention conditions. Counsel for Khan, Latif Khosa, cited a court order from August 24, 2023, in support of his arguments. Barrister Safdar later confirmed he would meet Imran Khan at 2:00 PM, acknowledging the responsibility placed on him by the court.
Meanwhile, hearings in other cases involving the PTI founder were adjourned: the foreign funding case has been postponed until February 20 by a banking court, and the female judge threat case has been deferred until February 28. Additionally, proceedings related to Faizabad protest cases in Islamabad’s Anti-Terrorism Court were adjourned due to the unavailability of witnesses, with the next hearing scheduled for February 16.
