ICC questions Pakistan’s selective T20 World Cup participation

ICC raises concerns over Pakistan’s stance on T20 World Cup

DUBAI: (Web Desk) – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed serious concern over the Government of Pakistan’s decision to instruct its national team to selectively participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, calling the move contrary to the spirit of global sporting events.

In an official media release, the ICC said it had taken note of the government’s statement but was still awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The global cricket body said that selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of an international tournament, where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms in accordance with the event schedule.

The ICC emphasized that its tournaments are built on principles of sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency, and fairness, adding that selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of international competitions.

PCB Sets Deadline for Multan Sultans Bids

While acknowledging the role of governments in matters of national policy, the ICC said the decision was not in the interest of the global game or cricket fans worldwide, including millions of supporters in Pakistan.

The ICC urged the PCB to carefully consider the significant and long-term implications of such a stance for cricket within Pakistan, warning that it could have wider repercussions for the global cricket ecosystem, of which Pakistan is an important member and beneficiary.

Reiterating its commitment to the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the ICC said this responsibility rests with all member boards, including the PCB. The council expressed hope that the PCB would work towards a mutually acceptable resolution that protects the interests of all stakeholders.
