High-Speed Train Collision in Southern Spain Kills 21, Dozens Injured
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
TEHRAN/ADAMUZ: (Web Desk)- At least 21 people have been confirmed dead and around 100 injured after a high-speed train derailed and collided with another train in southern Spain on Sunday, authorities said. Twenty-five of the injured are in serious condition.
The accident occurred near Adamuz, in Córdoba province, when an Iryo train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and struck a Renfe train coming from Madrid to Huelva. The driver of the Malaga-Madrid train was among those killed.
According to rail operator Adif, the Iryo train left Córdoba at 6:30 pm local time, and the collision happened roughly ten minutes later. The impact caused the carriages of both trains to overturn, leaving passengers trapped inside.
The Iryo train carried over 300 passengers, while the Renfe train had about 100 on board. First responders described a chaotic scene, with twisted metal and damaged seats, making rescue operations difficult. Some passengers had to use emergency hammers to break windows and escape.

Local authorities and residents of Adamuz, a town of 5,000 people, rushed to assist passengers, setting up reception centers with food and blankets amid cold nighttime temperatures of around 6°C (42°F).
Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said he was monitoring the situation closely and called the incident “very serious,” adding that the priority was aiding victims. The mayor of Adamuz described the scene as “horrific” and said officials were focused on helping passengers.
Iryo, a private rail operator majority-owned by Italy’s state railway group Ferrovie dello Stato, said it had activated emergency protocols and was cooperating with authorities. Rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended.
Passengers shared accounts of the derailment on X (formerly Twitter), describing the train shaking violently, lights going out, and staff guiding passengers to remain seated while awaiting rescue. Journalists on board reported that people were evacuated on stretchers and that emergency measures were being coordinated amidst the confusion.
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
