Morocco Hosts Senegal in AFCON 2026 Final
Morocco Faces Senegal in AFCON Final After 50-Year Wait
RABAT (Web Desk): The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) reaches its climax on Sunday as hosts Morocco face Senegal in a high-stakes final, with the Atlas Lions aiming to win the tournament for the first time in 50 years. The match kicks off at 19:00 GMT at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where nearly all of the 69,000-strong crowd is expected to support Morocco, led by African Player of the Year Achraf Hakimi.
Morocco have emerged as Africa’s top team in recent years, reaching the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and climbing to 11th in the FIFA rankings. However, AFCON glory has eluded them since their sole triumph in 1976. Senegal, in contrast, are appearing in their third final in four editions, seeking a second title after their 2022 victory, in which Sadio Mane scored the decisive penalty against Egypt.
Morocco’s success has been powered by Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz, the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, and a defence that has conceded only once. Coach Walid Regragui acknowledged the pressure of performing at home but vowed to make history: “Big football nations want to be up there on a regular basis. Tomorrow we want to try to make history.”

Off the pitch, security and logistical issues have created tension. Senegal’s team complained about inadequate security, limited tickets for their supporters, and substandard accommodation upon arrival in Rabat. Coach Pape Thiaw expressed concern for the safety of his players, while Mane, who previously announced this AFCON would be his last, may reconsider retiring from the tournament, according to Thiaw.
The final promises a dramatic showdown between two of Africa’s footballing powerhouses, with Morocco aiming to capitalize on home advantage and Senegal determined to defend their title.
