ISLAMABAD-(Mudassar Iqbal/News Desk)- Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided a detailed update on its diplomatic and regional engagements, emphasizing peace, dialogue, and regional stability. The briefing covered major developments involving India, the Middle East, Bangladesh, Somalia, Afghanistan, and China.

Pakistan–India Lists Exchange

On 1 January, Pakistan and India exchanged lists of prisoners and nuclear installations in line with bilateral agreements. Pakistan handed over a list of 257 Indian prisoners (58 civilians and 199 fishermen) to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. In return, India shared details of Pakistani prisoners held in Indian custody.

Additionally, both countries exchanged annual lists of nuclear installations and facilities under the 1988 Agreement on Prohibition of Attacks against Nuclear Facilities, reinforcing confidence-building measures. These steps reflect Pakistan’s commitment to legal frameworks, humanitarian treatment of prisoners, and regional stability, despite ongoing tensions with India.

Yemen and Middle East Diplomacy

Pakistan expressed deep concern over renewed violence in Yemen, emphasizing support for the country’s unity and territorial integrity. Islamabad condemned unilateral actions that escalate conflict and reiterated backing for peaceful resolutions through dialogue.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, highlighting shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and stronger bilateral cooperation. The Crown Prince also expressed interest in an official visit to Pakistan.

Pakistan maintained close contacts with the UAE, following the official visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which further strengthened trade, investment, energy, and development cooperation.

Strengthening Ties with Bangladesh

The Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, attended the state funeral of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. He conveyed Pakistan’s condolences and paid tribute to her contributions toward strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting Pakistan’s respect and commitment to regional partnerships.

Somalia, Palestine, and Afghanistan

Pakistan strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of the so-called Somaliland region, reaffirming support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also reaffirmed unwavering backing for Palestinian self-determination and a sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders.

On Afghanistan, Pakistan facilitated the safe repatriation of 306 Pakistani nationals, including students, while urging the Kabul authorities to ensure humanitarian access and prevent cross-border terrorist activities. Islamabad emphasized the importance of Afghan compliance with international law for regional security.

Pakistan–China Strategic Dialogue

Pakistan announced the 7th Pakistan–China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue, scheduled for 4 January 2026 in Beijing, at the invitation of China. This high-level forum strengthens bilateral ties, reviewing trade, strategic cooperation, regional security, and global developments.
