WASHINGTON: The approval of a new weight-loss pill in the United States has begun to trigger significant changes in the food industry.

Following the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill, shares of food companies fell. Estimates suggest that a competing drug from Eli Lilly will also be approved next year.

Research indicates that GLP-1 users tend to spend less on salty snacks, baked goods, soft drinks, and alcohol, while shifting their diets toward protein- and fiber-rich foods.
