Maryam Nawaz Criticizes Suspension of Punjab Protection of Ownership Law 2025

CM Punjab Warns Law Suspension Benefits Land Mafia

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed strong reservations over the suspension of the Punjab Protection of Ownership Law 2025, stating that the legislation aimed to resolve long-standing property disputes within 90 days.

Reacting to the Lahore High Court’s decision to suspend the Punjab Land Protection Law, Maryam Nawaz said the law was enacted to provide relief to millions of Punjab residents who have suffered for years and even decades due to prolonged property litigation.

She said the democratically elected provincial assembly passed the law to protect citizens from powerful land mafias, adding that for the first time, the public was empowered to safeguard their legally owned land and property.

The chief minister argued that the court’s decision was not in line with established principles set by the superior judiciary. She warned that suspending the law would benefit land grabbers and could be perceived by the public as support for the land mafia.

Maryam Nawaz noted that property cases often remain under stay orders for decades and clarified that the suspension of the law caused no personal loss to her. However, she stressed that lawmaking is the constitutional right of the provincial assembly and cannot be restricted.

She concluded that the suspension would harm the poor, the helpless, widows, and the oppressed, who were beginning to receive justice under the now-suspended law.
