Today Syria’s al-Sharaa to meet Russia’s Putin in Moscow

Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa meets Putin to discuss future ties and Russian bases.

Syria – Russia – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is meeting with Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin, for the first time in Moscow on Wednesday. This visit is a key step for the new Syrian government as it works to build its place in the world.

The leaders plan to talk about the relationship between their countries and important issues in the Middle East. A major topic will be the future of Russia’s military bases in Syria. President al-Sharaa is also expected to ask Russia to send former leader Bashar al-Assad back to Syria to face trial.

This meeting continues the growing contact between Syria’s new leaders and Moscow. Russia was the former ally of the ousted Assad government. President Putin spoke with al-Sharaa by phone in February, and Russian and Syrian foreign ministers met in July. Russia seems focused on protecting its strategic interests in Syria, which include a naval base on the Mediterranean coast.

The visit is part of President al-Sharaa’s larger effort to gain international support. He recently addressed the United Nations, asking for an end to sanctions and declaring that Syria is opening a new chapter of peace.
