Powerful typhoon forces mass evacuations in central Vietnam
Hundreds of thousands are evacuating their homes as the powerful storm approaches the coastline.
Vietnam – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Authorities in Vietnam are rushing to evacuate over 586,000 people from its central provinces as Typhoon Kajiki intensifies over the South China Sea. The storm is gaining strength rapidly, with wind speeds already reaching 166 kph (103 mph) and predicted to climb even higher.
The Vietnamese government has issued urgent orders for people in the path of the storm, which includes the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue, and Danang, to stay indoors. A large-scale evacuation is underway, with soldiers deployed to assist residents in moving to safer ground. The typhoon is forecast to make landfall early Monday, bringing extreme winds and heavy rain.
In preparation, all boats in seven coastal provinces have been ordered to remain in port. Air travel is also heavily disrupted, with Vietnam Airlines cancelling at least 22 flights to and from affected areas on Sunday and Monday. Other carriers are expected to announce further delays and cancellations.
