US Navy builds powerful drone fleet to counter rising China
The US Navy struggles with software glitches as it builds a powerful autonomous drone fleet against China.
US-China (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – The US Navy is racing to build a new fleet of autonomous drone boats designed to counter China’s growing naval power. However, recent tests have shown major challenges.
During a demonstration off California, one drone vessel suffered a software glitch and stalled. Another drone boat then collided with it, jumping over the deck before splashing back into the sea. Weeks earlier, another test saw a support boat capsize after a drone suddenly accelerated, throwing the captain into the water. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Both accidents were linked to software failures and communication issues between onboard systems and external controls. The incidents highlight the steep road ahead for the Navy’s ambitious drone fleet programme.

The Pentagon has already paused a $20 million contract with L3Harris, a key software provider, while reviewing safety concerns. Despite these hurdles, the Navy and tech companies like BlackSea and Saronic continue to push forward.
Military experts say drone swarms could reshape future sea battles, boosting surveillance and strike power at lower risk to human sailors. But with leadership changes and internal reviews, the Navy must balance speed, safety, and cost in this high-stakes race.
