Two Soldiers Martyred, Seven Injured in Cross-Border Terrorist Attack in Kurram
This incident has reignited concerns about border security and the arming of local tribes for self-defence.
Kurram: Two Pakistani soldiers embraced martyrdom and seven others sustained injuries in a terrorist attack launched from across the Afghan border in the Hasan Mela area of Kurram district, security sources confirmed on Thursday.
According to initial reports, the assailants targeted a security forces’ checkpost situated in the Lukman Khel Tangi area of Hussain Mela, adjacent to the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The attack was reportedly carried out from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.
In the aftermath of the assault, local tribal members quickly mobilized and formed a traditional militia (lashkar) to support the security response. The lashkar managed to apprehend one of the attackers. In a video statement recorded in the presence of tribal members, the captured militant confessed that weapons had been provided to the Taliban to carry out the attack.
This incident has reignited concerns about border security and the arming of local tribes for self-defence. Notably, the tribes in the region had surrendered their heavy weaponry to the government under a prior peace agreement.
