TikTok Can Now Turn Static Photos to Animated Clips

Users can access AI Alive by opening the Story Camera and selecting an image from the Story Album.

ISLAMABAD: TikTok has introduced a new feature called AI Alive, allowing users to transform static photos into short, animated clips using text prompts. The tool, powered by ByteDance’s proprietary image-to-video model, is now available through TikTok’s Story Camera feature.

How AI Alive Works

Users can access AI Alive by opening the Story Camera and selecting an image from the Story Album. A new AI Alive icon appears alongside existing editing tools. Once selected, a text box prompts the user to describe how they want the image to animate. The system then generates a video that brings the static scene to life.

According to TikTok, the tool can animate environmental changes, subtle expressions, and gestures. For instance, a sunset image can be turned into a cinematic clip with changing colors, drifting clouds, and ambient audio. Group selfies can be enhanced with animated motions and lifelike effects to create dynamic, shareable memories.

Safety and Transparency Measures

TikTok emphasized that AI Alive includes safeguards to prevent misuse. Every video generated with the feature will include C2PA metadata, a widely supported standard for tagging AI-generated content. This labeling helps viewers distinguish between human-made and synthetic media.

The company stated that the feature’s output undergoes multiple layers of review to detect and block harmful or inappropriate use cases. However, TikTok has not released a demo video yet, and the effectiveness of the feature in real-world use is still to be seen.
