US stops intelligence sharing with Ukraine after heated argument with Trump

WASHINGTON: The United States has “paused” intelligence sharing with Ukraine following a significant breakdown in relations between Kyiv and the White House, CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed on Wednesday. This development comes after a highly publicized fallout between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office last week, which was followed by the suspension of crucial US military aid to Ukraine.

Ratcliffe confirmed that intelligence sharing between the two countries had been temporarily halted as Ukraine continues its efforts to defend itself against the ongoing Russian invasion. Speaking to Fox News, Ratcliffe explained that President Trump raised concerns about Zelensky’s commitment to the peace process, which contributed to the suspension.

However, Ratcliffe emphasized that the suspension of both military and intelligence assistance was temporary, with the United States planning to resume collaboration with Ukraine in the near future.

In the wake of the fallout, President Trump mentioned on Tuesday that Zelensky had communicated to him that Kyiv was open to negotiations with Moscow and was also prepared to finalize a US minerals deal. Zelensky, eager to mend ties with Trump, publicly expressed regret over their recent disagreement, stating that he was committed to “making things right.”

Later on Tuesday, during his address to the US Congress, Trump read a letter from Zelensky that expressed Ukraine’s readiness to return to the negotiating table to work toward a lasting peace. The letter stated, “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians.”
