Shoaib Shaheen: PTI Respects Justice Afridi, Opposes Constitutional Amendment
Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shoaib Shaheen has stated that his party does not oppose the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
During an appearance on Aaj News’ program “Spotlight,” Shaheen clarified PTI’s stance, expressing respect for Justice Afridi both as a judge and an individual. However, he strongly criticized the process used to introduce the constitutional amendments that led to the appointment.
Shaheen emphasized that the party’s objection is not directed at the judge but at the principle of bypassing seniority in the selection process. He cautioned that ignoring seniority could pave the way for lobbying and favoritism within the judiciary.
He further condemned the 26th Constitutional Amendment, arguing that it has caused disruption in the judicial system.
In response to questions regarding Justice Mansoor Ali Shah’s non-selection, Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Barrister Aqeel Malik stated that the selection committee had evaluated all three candidates on merit, all of whom were deemed strong contenders. He denied that any personal bias played a role in the decision-making process.
