NZ Dunedin Airport Introduces Three-Minute Hug Limit for Farewells
Newzealand-(Special Correspondent/Webdesk) Dunedin has introduced a time limit on emotional farewells at its airport, allowing travelers just three minutes for goodbye hugs.
The new rule, implemented to alleviate congestion in the airport’s drop-off zone, is accompanied by signs stating, “Max hug time three minutes.”
Dunedin Airport CEO Dan De Bono explained that the measure, which took effect in September, aims to streamline the drop-off area and prevent extended farewells from causing delays. “It serves as a reminder that this area is intended for quick goodbyes,” De Bono said in a statement to the Associated Press.
The rule has generated mixed responses on social media; while some view it as an infringement on personal freedom, others appreciate the effort to maintain traffic flow. Unlike other airports that impose fines or wheel clamping for violations, Dunedin’s approach is seen as more lighthearted.
De Bono emphasized that there won’t be strict enforcement of the rule. “We do not have hug police,” he quipped, noting that longer farewells might be redirected to the parking lot, where travelers can enjoy up to 15 minutes of hugging for free.
While the new policy may appear restrictive, De Bono reassured that a 20-second hug is enough to release feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, adding that anything beyond that can become “really awkward.”
