Supreme Court’s Senior-most Justice Nominated for Chief Justice Position
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud has initiated the process for his succession by recommending Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, to the Union government.
According to Indian media reports, Justice Khanna is expected to take over as CJI following Justice Chandrachud’s retirement on November 10, 2024. His term as CJI is anticipated to continue until his own retirement on May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna boasts a distinguished legal career and was recommended for the position based on seniority. He has extensive expertise in various areas of law, including constitutional, commercial, and criminal law, and has held significant roles, such as additional public prosecutor and senior standing counsel for different government entities.
In accordance with tradition, the law ministry requested CJI Chandrachud to propose his successor in early October, leading to this recommendation. A formal notification confirming Justice Khanna’s appointment is expected to be issued soon, effective November 11, 2024.
Notably, Justice Khanna’s career is distinguished by his direct elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019, without having served as chief justice of any high court, highlighting his unique trajectory within the Indian judicial system.
